Zozotown founder buys Basquiat painting for $110.5 Million
Yusaku Maezawa Japanese entrepreneur and art collector purchased at auction in Sotheby's another Basquiat for $110.5 Million, "Untitled" 1982. Surpassing his previous Basquiat purchase record, last year for $57.3 million for a self-portrait of the artist.
Untitled 1982 was last sold in 1984 for $19,000 and had not been seen since then. Maezawa now plans to lend it to museums and institutions while he builds a new museum for contemporary art in Chiba.
In an interview with Forbes this April, Maezawa listed some of his precious acquisitions:
Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Alexander Calder, Donald Judd, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, On Kawara, Mark Grotjahn, Jonas Wood, Adrien Ghenie and Jeff Koons.
He also stated that what attracted him the most about Buste de Femme (Dora Maar) by Picasso which he purchased in New York for $22.3 million was "THE COLOR"
