My Luxury Guilty Pleasure

They can have their caviar and their Lobster. I’ll take my percebes.

 

This Spanish delicacy is my luxury guilty pleasure. They are rare to find so when I do, I will skip my starter, entrée and dessert and just splurge on this creatures.

 

In English they are called goose barnacles and they grow on rocks in the ocean. They are harvested  commercially in Spain and Portugal to be eaten boiled in brine and served hot.

 

How to eat percebes?

You have to pinch the diamond shaped foot with your thumb and a finger and the inner tube must be pulled from the case. Then you remove the claw and savour the delicious meat.

 

I have had some good ones in la Dorada in Miami, but the best are surely in Madrid at “La Trainera” pictures below
