It is much more than a green oasis in the middle of busy Amsterdam
It was founded in 1638 by the Amsterdam City Council, just after the city had experienced a plague epidemic. At that time herbs were of extreme importance for medicines, and it was imperative to acquire knowledge and keep doing research. The harts served as a practice place for doctors and pharmacists .
