Cloe Hakakian brings more faces to Wynwood *sponsorfed by Montana-Cans
Dia de los Muertos

Created during Art Basel 2017
Address: 2401 NW 5th ave, Miami, FL
One of the things I enjoy about Wynwood is that no two artists seem to approach a wall the same way. Walk a few blocks and the neighborhood shifts from abstract compositions to photorealism, typography, surrealism, or characters that become recognizable long before you learn the artist's name. That constant change is part of what made Wynwood feel different from anywhere else in Miami.
Painted during Art Basel Miami Beach 2017, this mural by Cloe Hakakian transformed the side of a commercial building at 2401 NW 5th Avenue into a vibrant Día de los Muertos inspired installation. Sponsored by Montana Cans, the work stretched across the entire façade, filling the wall with brightly colored calaveras framed by stained glass inspired forms, flowers, stars, and vivid geometric patterns.
The mural was created over the course of approximately 160 hours using nearly 200 cans of spray paint, a reminder of the scale and planning required for public artwork of this size. From a distance, the composition reads almost like a continuous procession. Up close, every face carries its own personality through different expressions, colors, and details.
One of the reasons Wynwood has become such an important destination for public art is that artists aren’t limited by the dimensions of a canvas. Entire buildings are becoming the artwork. Public art in Wynwood extends far beyond aesthetics. Murals bring color, personality, and a sense of place to buildings that might otherwise go unnoticed. As more artists contribute to the neighborhood, the streets themselves become part of the experience, attracting visitors, photographers, businesses, and continued investment.
