President Stephen Owens of Swire Properties Announces Retirement
Stephen Owens, the long-serving president of Swire Properties, revealed his retirement plans, set to take effect in January 2017. A pivotal figure within the U.S. real estate subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Swire Pacific, Owens has dedicated an impressive 31 years to Swire Properties.
Having initially joined the company in 1976, Owens embarked on a journey that saw him assume various managerial roles before ultimately ascending to the presidency in 1985, as outlined in a press release detailing his retirement. Owens played a significant role in the development of Brickell Key, an artificial island near Brickell that Swire predominantly acquired during the 1970s. Over time, Brickell Key has evolved into a thriving hub adorned with luxurious high-rise condos, office spaces, and the prestigious Mandarin Hotel.
The timing of Owens' retirement announcement coincides with a significant milestone for Swire – the impending completion of the first phase of its flagship Miami project, the $1.05 billion Brickell City Centre, scheduled to open in November. Owens, set to retire in January, will witness the fruition of this monumental project before stepping down.
Taking the helm following Owens' departure will be Kieran Bowers, a seasoned Swire veteran who joined the company in 1998. Currently serving as the general manager of Hong Kong's Cityplaza, a colossal mixed-use project akin to Brickell City Centre, Bowers brings substantial experience to the role. Cityplaza boasts a vast expanse of 3.27 million square feet, housing three office towers, a lifestyle hotel, and Hong Kong's largest shopping mall.
While Owens transitions away from the presidential role, he will retain a seat on Swire's board, offering ongoing guidance to the company. His continued presence will be instrumental, especially as Swire embarks on developing future phases of Brickell City Centre, anticipated to be significant ventures.
