Work at Mercedes-Benz Places continues below street level, with the excavation extending close to the neighboring apartment buildings. The April 18 views show substantial steel bracing across the site and workers assembling reinforcement below. From the apartments overlooking it, there is little distance between someone’s balcony and the construction.

The large horizontal steel struts brace the retaining walls around the excavation. Beneath them, a dense grid of reinforcement is being laid out, while bars project from concrete sections elsewhere on the site. Some areas are further along than others. The photographs show the work involved in preparing the underground structure, much of which will be concealed once construction advances.

This is the site previously known as 1 Southside Park, where rental apartments and a Treehouse Brickell hotel were proposed. The developer is still Michael Stern’s JDS Development Group. The residential offering has changed, however. Mercedes-Benz Places is now being sold as 791 condominium residences in a 67-story development, with offices, retail and hospitality space also planned.

Anyone who remembers the earlier renderings will recognize the architecture. The stacked volumes and deep setbacks were already present in SHoP Architects’ Southside Park scheme. The Mercedes-Benz collaboration develops that design under a new residential identity, with ODP as executive architect, Woods Bagot handling residential interiors and Field Operations responsible for the landscape.

The park remains an important part of the plans. Field Operations is designing improvements to Southside Park, and the earlier proposal included a pedestrian passage from SW 2nd Avenue, with café space and lobbies opening along it. That would give this stretch of the neighborhood something more useful than another long building frontage to walk around. With the Metrorail station and The Underline nearby, the route through the property deserves to be followed as closely as the construction above it.
